Look -- up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!

It's the Old Fan's Commentary On
SUPERMAN!

Superman

This week we flip back-and-forth between 1940 and 1948 to watch two different incarnations of Superman!

We'll watch the earliest (and arguably best) animated adventures of Superman. Produced by Max and Dave Fleischer, the 1940s animated Superman featured realistic humanoid characters, full animation, giant monsters, robots, volcanoes, and mad scientists with death rays.

The voice actors for the animated Superman were the same as those voicing the characters on radio. This leads to Bud Collyer's iconic line, "This looks like a job for Superman!" in his trademark change of voice. Collyer went on the be the primary voice actor for all animated Superman adventures through the early 1970s.

The animated Superman adventures were the very first time the character was portrayed on the silver screen.

We'll also watch the 1948 Superman serial, which is the first time the character was brought to live action.

Superman starred Kirk Alyn and Noel Neill as Clark Kent and Lois. While George Reeves would go on to play Superman on television, Neill was the primary Lois Lane actress in film and TV for full decade.

Both incarnations are wonderful examples of bringing the action/adventure of the comics to the screen. While definitely children's shows, there's ample "time in the suit" with Superman performing amazing feats.

We'll be watching from Dailymotion rather than YouTube. It's difficult to find a high-quality version of one of the Fleischer animated adventures. Dailymoton provides great video quality for both the Fleischer and live-action versions.

The Dailymotion playlist is organized to simulate the movie-going experience of the 1940s.

Get your popcorn and soda pop; grab the arms of your seat; and get set for two hours of action, adventure, and really wild things on The Old Fan's Commentary on Superman!
